Thispaperaddressesdendriticequiaxedgrowthduringgrainstructureformationinalloysolidification,andfocusesonthegrowth
andinteractionofprimarydendritearms,whichdriveandlimitgraindevelopment,respectively.Dedicatedsolidificationexperiments
onAl10wt.%CualloywerecarriedoutattheEuropeanSynchrotronRadiationFacility,enablingliveobservationbyinsituand
real-timesynchrotronX-rayradiography.Equiaxedsolidificationwasachievedbycoolingnearlyisothermalsamples,andthegrowth
ofthegrainswascontinuouslymonitoredfromtheveryearlystagesofsolidificationuptoastatewherechangesingrainstructurewere
nolongervisibletotheobserver’snakedeye.Thetimeevolutionofindividualequiaxedgrainsisanalysedthroughmeasurementsofthe
lengthsandtip
